Photo diary: Iceland day 4

June 8, 2012

Friday morning, Andy had a long-course swim first thing (800-meter freestyle). Afterwards, we piled into the car with Brad, Jim, and Fede.

Destination: Þingvellir National Park. (That first letter is called a thorn and is pronounced “th” and a double-L in Icelandic is pronounced “tl” — also r’s are rolled and slightly aspirated, so Þingvellir is pronounced “Thingvetlih.”) This is where the European and North American continents meet, and where you can see and experience where the tectonic plates have shifted.

This place has huge historical significance for Icelanders as the site of the first meeting of the Althingi, or Parliament — it’s called Lögberg (Law Rock) and has special acoustic resonance.

A beautiful river runs alongside Lögberg

Beautiful waterfalls are everywhere in Iceland — we hadn’t gotten sick of them, yet.

On our way to Lögberg, we stopped at a scenic gorge and frolicked

Some of us went skyclad, which I didn’t think it would ever be warm enough to do in Iceland

We got back to Reykjavik in time for a cocktail party hosted by Elizabeth Turnbull-Brown, the ebullient Aussie who is currently president of Team New York Aquatics

I had a gin and tonic and admired Michael Tynan’s ears and schnozz

Then it was on to Nauthólsvík Beach, where some hardy swimmers engaged in a 250-meter open-water swim

including Randall and Joe, who reported that the water was cold but not arctic

Then there was a barbecue

We got back to the apartment around 11:15 pm — the golden hour

Quote of the day: INITIATION

June 7, 2012

INITIATION

Soul initiation refers to that extraordinary moment in life when we cross over from psychological adolescence to true adulthood, from our first adulthood to our second. At that moment, our everyday life becomes firmly rooted in the purposes of the soul. The embodiment of our soul powers becomes as high a priority in living as any other. But it’s not so much that we choose at that moment to make soul embodiment a top priority; it’s more as if the soul commands us to that task and we assent.
In the Western culture, we need to be careful with the word initiation. Many people associate it with elitism, secret societies, flaky or nefarious cults, and oppressive, hierarchical organizations. For some people, the word evokes, on the one hand, a sense of their own inadequacy (if they have not undergone an initiatory experience and believe they ought to have) and, on the other, suspicions of arrogance or ego inflation on the part of those who participate in initiatory rites. Due to its considerable charge, it may be best to avoid public declarations of being initiated. Soul initiation is not something to be worn like a badge or status symbol; it is to be quietly embodied through a life of soulful service.
Soul initiation transforms our lives by the power of the truth at the center of our soul image. Embracing the truth results in a radical simplification of our lives. Activities and relationships not supportive of our soul purpose begin to fall away. Our former agendas are discarded, half-completed projects abandoned. Many old problems are not solved but outgrown. Old ways of presenting and defending ourselves become less appealing, and less necessary.
At soul initiation, our lives are changed forever, irreversibly.

Photo diary: Iceland day 3 — swimming and diving competitions

June 6, 2012

Thursday was a big day for Andy — two swimming events and one diving competition. The morning began with warming up at the big pool, Laugardalslaug.

Team New York Aquatics was a big presence at IGLA — 74 attendees, including Ethan, Andy, Timmy, and Randall

Alex played on the water polo team

Andy won a silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley

Then we hightailed it over to the other pool, Sundhöllin, for the diving events

I shot some of their practice dives — here’s Judy on the three-meter high dive

And Croft, the diving coach, in mid-flight from the one-meter board, with Allison waiting her turn on top

Croft asked me to be the team’s videographer, so I got a seat up close in order to film everybody’s dives. Couldn’t resist this shot….

Andy was thrilled to win the gold medal on his first diving competition ever.

The diving competition was dominated by New Yorkers — the other three were from California

On our way to dinner, we took a quick tour of the interior of Harpa, the new concert hall

After dinner at Icelandic Fish and Chips, we spied this mural, and Allison, Andy, and Judy manifested their own Wild Things

Quote of the day: WRITING

WRITING

A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.
