Culture Vulture: picks for theater, books, music, film

January 28, 2010

Here’s some stuff I recommend:

San Francisco theater:

Keith Hennessy’s Crotch (all the Joseph Beuys references in the world…), which was fantastic at Dance Theater Workshop in New York last May, plays at Dance Mission this weekend, Friday through Sunday — for tickets, go here.

Keith Hennessy in "Crotch"

New York theater:

Fela!
A View from the Bridge
The Myopia and Plays, David Greenspan’s double feature at Atlantic Stage 2 (to February 7 only)
Pataphysics Penyeach — the Mabou Mines double-bill of Porco Morto and Summa Dramatica, featuring amazing performances by Ruth Maleczech, Greg Mehrten, and a crazy animated version of NY Times critic Charles Isherwood — final 4 performances this weekend (for a special discount, $20, go here and use the discount code wk3pp)

Books:

Sarah Schulman’s The Mere Future — funny, smart, poetic utopian vision of New York City by the great lesbian novelist

Music:

For the first time, I find myself digging Vampire Weekend — the new album Contra, especially the song “Taxi Cab”

Movies:

Precious
